Helen tasker12/22/2023 He doesn't know what else to do, because, like all men in this movie, Harry is befuddled about women. Spying on Helen, Harry calls out helicopters, radar and national-security experts. He is the image of the tough guy undone by the little woman.Īs this comedy of manners unfolds, it is played for all-out action as well as satiric humor. When it seems that Helen has given in to the fake charms of a sleazy used-car salesman, Harry is so distraught he almost walks in front of a bus. If Helen is the bored, uncomplaining wife, Harry is the obtuse, work-obsessed husband who takes her for granted. THE MOST ENGAGING PART OF the film is the long middle section, which toys with marital types. Cameron charts the comic course of a female stereotype falling to pieces. ![]() By showing Helen's transformation in "True Lies," Mr. The heroines of "Aliens" and "Terminator 2," however, developed their biceps between movies, in the time lapse between the original films and the sequels. But pop culture always reflects mainstream attitudes, if only inadvertently, and in their exaggerated ways these films hint at how women's lives have changed. Traditionally, action films have been directed at male viewers adding a character with whom women can identify broadens the audience appeal. He is responsible for the macho Sigourney Weaver in "Aliens" and the pumped-up, rifle-toting Linda Hamilton in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day." Expanding women's roles in action movies like these, and to a lesser degree in Jan De Bont's "Speed," has little to do with charting social change (as if these movies cared). Cameron is the master of movies that put women at the center of the action. She is at least as crucial to the plot - saving America from terrorists with a nuclear bomb - as Harry. Despite appearances, from that point on Helen is more than the hero's sexual sidekick. When she starts dancing, in little black undergarments that are hardly what she would have been wearing beneath that matronly dress, you can give the movie some leeway. This is an old movie scene: the one in which the secretary takes off her glasses, lets down her hair and turns into a vamp. She is left wearing a tiny, body-hugging black dress. Even Helen suddenly knows that this costume will give her away, so she desperately tears off the long, puffy sleeves, high neck and flouncy skirt. ![]() Ordered to "wear something sexy," Helen arrives in the frilliest, least sexy frock ever imagined. Harry, trying to add excitement to his wife's dull life, dupes her into thinking that she is on a Government mission posing as a call girl. Just when you're amazed that she has made herself so convincingly drab as Helen, she is transformed. Her change is witty and liberating, and a turning point in a film that might be a comic-action version of "Scenes From a Marriage." Curtis changes from a mouse to an action hero. ![]() Like Sandra Bullock, who drives the bus in "Speed," in the course of "True Lies" Ms. That, of course, is the plot and the joke of "True Lies," which opened on Friday: Helen (Jamie Lee Curtis) doesn't realize that her snooze of a husband, Harry (Mr. It's as if she doesn't know she is married to Arnold Schwarzenegger. Her hair is mousy, her clothes are frumpy, and her job as a legal secretary seems to offer all the excitement she can handle. IN THE EARLY SCENES OF "TRUE Lies," Helen Tasker doesn't look like a woman who is wearing Victoria's Secret underwear.
